OPEN FOR EVERYONE

The Billericay Reading Rooms are historic premises located in Billericay High Street, nearly opposite St Mary Magdalen church. We are a Registered Charity (No 301252).

The rooms were founded in 1864 for the benefit of the people of Billericay, to address the need "to educate the working classes and to aid their growth and improvement".

Needs have changed over the years and in the last century the Rooms were used in several different ways.

Nowadays, regular events open to the public take place in the rooms. The rooms are also available for private hire and can accommodate up to 60 people seated. See 'Hiring the Halls' for more details.

PUBLIC EVENTS

There are many regular classes available, for example meetings for the visually impaired, meditation classes, Workers' Educational Association classes, and many more.

Local businesses occasionally hire the hall for sales of speciality items or locally-grown produce.

To find out what events are coming up at the Reading Rooms, see the What's On page.

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS

In recent years the Trustees of the Reading Rooms have organised special exhibitions of work by local junior school children to mark special local or national anniversaries and events. For example we have recently held an exhibition of work done by local schoolchildren to mark the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower to America.

Visit the History page to see details of events from previous years.
